Norm Brodsky's recent column on this topic came up in a recent client meeting. The CEO, having successfully built a regional company over 30 years, was grappling with whether to sell or stay independent.
A business partner with equal number of years in the same industry was in town for a site visit. At lunch, he asked the CEO what his exit plans were. My client turned the question back to him and asked his prognostication of where their sector was heading. The partner, having a global view on their sector, plainly stated that he thought that technology would turn the entire face of their industry within 3-5 years.
After lunch, as we were debriefing, the President asked if I read Norm's columns. I mentioned I had actually met him at an Inc. conference and indeed enjoyed. We had both read Build to Sell and spoke how Norm's situation could become exactly the same as theirs - technology could change their situation in short order.
